We knew that before the provincial government would even consider a mid-province highway, we’d have to demonstrate widespread public support for it from communities along the proposed route.  By the spring of 2016, we’d received 12 letters of support in principle from municipalities, regional districts, a First Nation, two chambers of commerce and a few others.  By fall 2016, support had swelled to 20, covering an area from Qualicum Beach to the north end of Vancouver Island, and from Powell River all the way through the interior to the Alberta border, with only two gaps. (See map, below.) Premier Clark has asked retiring MLA Don McRae to produce a list of Vancouver Island priorities, and we’re working to ensure that our now trans-provincial highway is among them.

Above map shows regional districts that have voted the third crossing support in principle. 1. Mount Waddington; 2. Alberni Clayo- quot; 3. Comox Valley; 4. Powell River; 5. Squamish Lillooet; 6. Columbia Shuswap. Within them are fourteen municipalities and other organizations that have voted support in their own right.

Traffic from the interior will access the new road from Highway 97 near Cache Creek via Highway 99 (the Pavilion Lake Road to Lillooet and the improved Duffey Lake Road). Island traffic will access via the Comox ferry.

The new stretch, from Brackendale on Highway 99 to the Powell River end of the Comox ferry, will form a connecting link between the coastal communities and the Interior and open miles of new coastline.  It will require upgrading 173 km of existing mostly high quality logging roads, 42 km of new road, and one 3.2 km tunnel.

Below is the list of supporters to date.  We welcome letters from organizations, businesses and individuals. Please send your letter of support to Third Crossing Society, 1A – 7624 Duncan Street, Powell River, British Columbia, V8A 5L2.
